Should not you tell clearly what is possible and what is not before collecting credit card info?

DigitalOcean WordPress

Hi, i wanted to register and spin up a word press site .. i chose digital ocean after comparing it with other providers regarding the quality and the price .. but once i started to create a droplet with word press, it told me that i need 30Gb disk at least .. which mean i should go with the higher plan (10$).
i have seen all the tutorials on the internet with the same word press and ubuntu and with the 5$ plan, and i have made my decision based on that price.
i think you should either clearly explain the restrictions or provide us at least with an option to increase the Hard disk capacity without going the full 10$ plan.

  • If you choose the WordPress image it will prevent you from selecting the $5 plan because 512MB of RAM isn't enough for WordPress.

However you are free to install Ubuntu or any other base OS image on a $5 plan and setup LAMP and WordPress yourself. It'll be able to serve low traffic websites.

  • yeah thanks, a little bit longer way but it will work.
Note: if wordpress doesn't work properly on 512MB of RAM, so maybe i think that the hint box should mention that instead of saying that wordpress requires 30GB of storage which is unrealistic.

We recently disabled the ability to create WordPress droplets on the 512MB plan from the control panel because these droplets had a tendency for the MySQL process to exhaust the available RAM and crash. You can still host WordPress on a 512MB droplet but you'll need to take a couple extra steps.

1.) Create a 512MB Ubuntu 14.04 droplet and paste this script into the user-data field. This script will take care of installing all the necessary packages and set up WordPress on your droplet just as the application image would.

2.) Set up a swap file on your droplet. This will help to prevent MySQL crashes due to a lack of memory.

Once you follow these two steps you'll have a 512MB WordPress droplet ready to go.

Swap space can be used as an "overflow" area for your system when you run out of RAM. The operating system can store data that would normally be kept in RAM on the hard drive in a specially formatted file. In this guide, we'll demonstrate how to create and use one of these files in Ubuntu 14.04.
  • I followed the steps that you said but the script reported errors when creating the droplet
it created some files here and there but the db was not setup properly an so on..
so i decided to go with a clean ubuntu and set up every thing my self, i tried to rebuild the droplet from the original and from a new image but the associated script seems to execute every time!
How can i delete this script from my settings, and prevent it from running when i try to rebuild the image?

I can confirm that 512mb is more than enough for running wordpress, but you should:

Nginx is a fast and lightweight alternative to the sometimes overbearing Apache 2. However, Nginx just like any kind of server or software must be tuned to help attain optimal performance. Here's how to optimize Nginx configuration.
