Hi there,
I’ve been hosting my personal sites on shared hosting for a good few years now, I’m doing a lot more server-side development so it makes more sense for me to move to a VPS, I’m a student so I don’t have a huge amount to spend on D.O. and I’m not even sure how much I would use or should be paying, Could anyone help me understand what sort of configuration / DO plan I should purchase for usage around:
*Current Shared plan is: * 400GB Bandwidth 20GB Diskspace 50 Domains (I know this is irrelevant for DO) Softaculous (Makes everything so easy) Cpanel (Irrelevant I Suppose)
**Basically looking for something similar to this that would cater for my needs but not go over the top too much? **

Most of my answer here will be hedged by this… without knowing the traffic and load those 50 sites are placing on things (amount of traffic, what WP plugins are used, etc) it’s hard to estimate.
That being said, our smallest $5 droplet would theoretically support most of this. It provides:
1 CPU core 512MB Memory (not enough for cPanel, barely enough for WP+MySQL) 20GB Disk 1TB monthly transfer (bandwidth)
I would recommend starting out with at least the $10 option which provides:
1 CPU Core 1GB Memory 30GB Disk 2TB monthly transfer
We do not currently offer cPanel or Softaculous licenses but you can install both on a droplet if you acquire a license (for cpanel you can buy from cpanel.net or a reseller). The last time I checked, a VPS license for cPanel for a single host is $15/monthly. You could also choose to go with an open source or free control panel (there are a few out there) or configure your services manually (we’ve got guides for just about everything.
Since we do not know what kind of load your sites will put on your droplet you can set things up and monitor this. If you need to upgrade to a larger plan you can do either a flexible (can be undone) resize or a permanent resize of your droplet without having to re-install or re-configure anything.
