When i load up my vps in putty and it says change the password, i enter something then it just closes itself

Apologies, this can be a bit confusing if you’ve not dealt with it before. What you are seeing is what happens when a password expires in Linux. When we set a password for you, we immediately set it to expire so that there exists no plain text record of it.
When prompted to change the password, it will ask you to repeat the original password again. Often people who have not seen this before will begin entering the new password instead. So first you will enter the password to log in, then it asks you to repeat it. After you repeat that same password, you will then be asked twice for the new password that you want to set.
