When does DO plan to add more storage options? I would love to have the ability to have a ownCloud droplet running on the $5/month plan and pay extra for addition backend storage that doesnt need to be on SSD’s.

We know that additional storage options are a high priority for many of our users, so it is definitely on our radar. We us UserVoice to gather feature request and gauge user support. There is already an open request there for larger storage options. You can vote for it to show your support and subscribe to get notifications when its status is changed.
In the meantime, you might be interested to know about the “External storage support” app that is part of ownCloud. It alllows you to mount a number of different stoarage options which ownCloud will use as a backend.
