Wordpress Image - MySQL root password?

November 1, 2014 4.4k views

I just spun a new droplet with an embedded ssh key, from a wordpress image.

Where do I find the root password for MySQL?

I was able to login as
mysql -uroot
no password

ssh into the droplet, it should be in the motd

  • ah, so that’s it? stupid me… never even tried that! thought that was only for wp’s db.

  • Hmm. I see only wordpress admin password in motd. Where mysql root password?

  • Update: I’ve actually tried the credentials shown in the MOTD and it doesn’t have root access.

I ended up just spinning a new droplet, from a LAMP image this time. And there, in the MOTD, the root credentials are shown.

    • Next time:

      1. ssh into the droplet
      2. type “mysql -uroot”
      3. run command “SET PASSWORD FOR ‘root’@'localhost’ = PASSWORD('mynewpass’);”
  • Yes, the mysql root password is not in the MOTD (message of the day to anyone else following along). So what is the root password?
