It’s simple enough for me to log in as root and upload stuff to var/www/wordpress using sftp but when I then try to upload from within WordPress I’m not able to do it unless I reset ownership using chown to www-data. I am wondering if there’s a way to do this differently so that this isn’t always the case.

Try adding the other users to the www-data group, e.g. <br> <br>usermod -aG www-data user
