cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: certificate has expired even though ssl is disabled

Posted on February 13, 2021

Hello everyone,

I am using ubuntu 20. Everything was fine but recently I can perform any curl request. Each time I do showing cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: certificate has expired (see https://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/libcurl-errors.html)

What I tried:

  1. renew certificate using certbot.
  2. reinstalling certificate using certbot
  3. disable ssl verification. But then another issue arises: cURL error 56: OpenSSL SSL_read: Connection reset by peer, errno 104 (see https://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/libcurl-errors.html) 4.I tried disabling the certificate using certbot delete but still giving me the error.

Hello,

This error would occur when your SSL certificate has expired. You could add the -k flag to your curl command to ignore the SSL warning.

Or a better solution is to renew your certificate. You can follow the steps here on how to do that:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-secure-apache-with-let-s-encrypt-on-ubuntu-18-04

By removing the certificate you would no longer be able to access your domain/website via HTTPS on port 443, this is why you are getting the Connection reset by peer error.
