I was exploring the Droplet Metadata service and noticed there was a field named “auth_key” in the response. I couldn’t find any documentation saying what the token is used for. Can it be used for the DO public API or is it for something else entirely?

I assume it’s exactly related to the DigitalOncean’s API with your account. Having said that, can you please confirm where exactly did you found the metadata so that I can go over it and confirm with you about the “auth_key” setting?
