After rebooting droplet with Ghost preinstalled, I can only start ghost up in production mode (node index) but I can’t get out of my terminal unless I type command-C which shuts it down and brings back the 502 Bad Gateway error.

Ghost should be restarted automatically when you reboot the droplet. The “One-Click” app installs a Upstart file that should allow you to start and stop Ghost using like other system service, i.e. :
sudo service ghost status
sudo service ghost start
sudo service ghost stop
