Postfix: Sorry, I couldn't find a mail exchanger or IP address. (#5.4.4)

Posted on September 2, 2014

I am unable to receive e-mails using Postfix. Whenever I try to send a message I get a “Sorry, I couldn’t find a mail exchanger or IP address. (#5.4.4)” reply.

Also, when I looked in my /var/mail/ folder…I noticed that there are no files for any of the user accounts on my server. Instead, all I see are two files “nobody” and “www-data”

The first problem sounds like you haven’t set up DNS MX records for the domain.

For the second, I would wager that /var/mail/* or ~/Maildir are not created until mail is received for a given user.
