I see that taking a snapshot requires me to shutdown the droplet and I saw that it is recommended that you shut down droplets from the command line. The command line given:
sudo shutdown -r now
seems to just reboot the server. If I run that command I lose the connection. If I then try to take a snapshot I’m told that it’s still running. If I try to log in again I find I can.
What am I doing wrong?

You can use the “-h” attribute with the command
-H halt after shutdown (implies -h)```
Command would be as follows
sudo shutdown -h now
Hope it helps :)
sudo shutdown -r now will cause the server to be rebooted.
From the man page:
-r Requests that the system be rebooted after it has been brought down.
You want simply,
sudo shutdown now
