I’m trying to follow the The Upstart Event System article, but when I start my service manually, I get:
Failed to start testjob.service: Unit testjob.service not found
My script looks like this:
description "A test job file for experimenting with Upstart"
author "elkdanger"
start on runlevel [2345]
echo Test Job ran at `date` >> /var/log/testjob.log
I’ve run init-checkconf on it and the syntax is reported as being ok. Any ideas?

As of 16.04 upstart scripts are no longer supported by default on Ubuntu. 16.04 uses systemd.
