Why are you switching from qcow2 to raw image storage?

Posted on June 16, 2014

I was told my a DO support agent that you guys are switching from qcow2 to raw for your VM storage and he didnt have an answer to why and suggested I ask here.

Why the change? Isnt the performance nearly identical these days and there are a log of extra features that qcow2 offers.

Thanks for your time.

Switching to the raw image format is part of our ongoing effort to transition to v1.5 of our code base. It’s initially available in our SGP1 datacenter, but will be rolling out in others as well. Our engineering team has found it to be more flexible than qcow2 for their needs.

More generally, raw still has some slight performance gains on qcow2. Also since it’s just a file, it makes backing up and moving it arounds simple.
