You can examine the MySQL error_log file in order to track down any errors as well. You can check the exact location of the MySQL error log with these commands:
On Ubuntu droplet:
grep log_error /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf
The usual output will be:
log_error = /var/log/mysql/error.log
For CentOS droplets
grep log-error /etc/my.cnf
The usual output will be
log-error=/var/lib/mysql/droplet-hostname.err
You can then check the last 100 rows (or more if needed) logged in the error_log
tail -n 100 /var/log/mysql/error.log
You can look for any errors like:
InnoDB: Cannot allocate memory for the buffer pool
