Question

how to automate login to github?

every time I run “git pull origin master” I am prompted for my github username and password. How to automate that?

I have run all the SSH steps in the terminal of my droplet: ssh-keygen ssh-add goto github. new ssh key. copy and paste the ssh public key. ssh -T git@github.com

got the message saying I had successfully authenticated.

I also ran: git config --global user.email xxxx git config --global user.name xxx

Hello,

My guess would be that you’ve got your Git source set to HTTP rather than SSH in your Git Config.

To change that edit your Git Config, it is stored at:

.git/config

Look for the [remote "origin"] line and update it from HTTP to SSH:

ssh://git@github.com/YOUR_USER/YOUR_REPO.git

If you are unsure what your exact SSH URL is, you can get it directly from your Github repository by clicking the Clone button and choosing SSH.

This would allow you to authenticate with your SSH key rather than your Git user and password.

Hope that this helps! Regards, Bobby

very good. that worked.

I have two windows PCs. Both are setup with SSH private keys. And both bypass the user name and password prompts. But the .git/config file on the windows PC does not have the ssh://git … setting.
