Question

How to upgrade MySQL server, for the one-click app

Hello,

I’m using the PHPMyAdmin one-click app, but the MySQL server version is way behind and I’m not sure how to upgrade it without breaking anything

The current version is:

mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.7.30, for Linux (x86_64) using EditLine wrapper
innodb_version 5.7.30
protocol_version 10
slave_type_conversions
tls_version TLSv1,TLSv1.1,TLSv1.2
version 5.7.30-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
version_comment (Ubuntu)
version_compile_machine x86_64
version_compile_os Linux

I need at least version: 8.0+, because there is functions in those version and higher that I need for my app.

Hi there @Geekologist,

With the PHPmyAdmin 1-Click installation, you get MySQL 5.7 and PHPmyAdmin 4.6.6. I believe that if you upgrade your MySQL installation you would need to upgrade PHPmyAdmin to the latest version as well as PHPmyAdmin 4.x might not be compatible with MySQL 8.x.

What I could suggest is rather than using the PHPmyAdmin image from the Marketplace, spin up a new Ubuntu Droplet and install the latest MySQL version as per this tutorial here:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-the-latest-mysql-on-ubuntu-18-04

After that install the latest PHPmyAdmin version manually as described in this answer here:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/how-to-install-manually-phpmyadmin-on-ubuntu

The reason why you need to install PHPmyAdmin manually is that the PHPmyAdmin version available from apt is not the latest.

Hope that this helps! Regards, Bobby
