Why does Unreal Engine get hung up on some operations while using DO?


I’m new to digital ocean and am using this with P4 for a project. I have never seen this anywhere else and have used p4 for years now. My project in Unreal keeps getting hung up for 5-10 seconds when doing certain operations. For example, if I ctrl z in a blueprint - it freezes. If I play in the editor it freezes, when I stop playing in the editor it freezes, and so on. I have dupped this project and tried without it connected to source control and it works perfectly. I have tried other larger projects and it works perfectly. It’s odd that it’s doing this because all that stuff should be local and not done through the cloud. like saving a file that’s already checked out, or simply playing in the editor. So I’m lost on what to do.

Hi there,

Does your server have enough resources like CPU and RAM? I could suggest checking your resource utilization, here’s how you can do that:

For CPU:

  1. You can use top command in terminal to see the overall CPU usage in real-time

    Look at the %Cpu(s) line. If you see a high percentage in us (user) or sy (system), then the CPU usage is high.

  2. To see CPU usage of a specific process, still using top, look for your process (in your case, probably Unreal Engine). The %CPU column tells you how much CPU that process is using.

For RAM:

  1. You can use the free -h command in terminal to see the overall RAM usage.

    The used column in the Mem: line tells you how much RAM is currently being used.

  2. In top, the %MEM column tells you how much memory a specific process is using.

If your CPU or RAM usage is consistently high while experiencing issues in Unreal, it could be that your system resources are being exhausted, causing the freezing. You may need to upgrade your server and add some extra resources.

Another thing that you could check is the network latency, how far is the server that you are using? I could suggest spinning up a server in a region that is nearest to your physical location. You could try running an mtr to see if there is any packet loss as well.
