Are droplet charges applied per hour, day, week or month?

Hello,

I enjoyed using DigitalOcean so much while I had the free $50 from GitHub student, now I plan to use the services again as a normal customer.

I wanted to use a droplet to host a gamer server, however, I’m still not sure how much RAM or CPU does it need so my plan was to:

  1. Create a basic regular intel with 2 CPU/ 4GB RAM
  2. See how the resource usage behaves for a day
  3. Take down the droplet and create a basic premium intel with the required resources that it will actually use

Hence my big question is how does DigitalOcean make the charges? (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly)

Thank you

Hi @jouo,

At the end of each calendar month, DigitalOcean calculates the cost of your server based on the size of your droplet. All droplets are billed at an hourly rate up to a maximum monthly cap, which is set at 672 hours (28 days).

Therefore, if you use the server for less than the monthly cap, you will be billed for each hour that you used it. However, if you use your server for more than 672 hours during that month, you will be billed at the monthly cost, which will be no greater than the cost of 672 hours.

Additional services (automatic backups, etc.) may lead to further charges.

If you have added a credit card to your account, any due balances will be billed automatically on the first of the month. Should there be any issues with charging your card for the month we will notify you via email.

If you have promotional credits as well, then promotional credits will be utilized first, and then credits applied from PayPal will be used before charging any remaining balance to the credit card.

Now on to your plan. I think that’s the best way to do it. Start with a smaller droplet and if needed upgrade to a larger one. No need to start with a large droplet if you are not sure you’ll utilize the resources.
