Question

Help with missing block-storage data, after restoring Droplet from Backup Service snapshot

I’m posting here because the Ticket center is not being helpful.

As the title to my question state, I need help restoring missing block-storage data, after restoring a Droplet from Backup Service snapshot.

My goal was to restore a Droplet to an earlier state, and to keep the data on the attached volume current. I was NOT attempting to restore the volume data from an earlier state.

What I had:

  • Droplet (2023-01-20)
  • Block Storage (2023-01-20)

What I desired:

  • Droplet (2023-01-16)
  • Block Storage (2023-01-20)

What I got instead:

  • Droplet (2023-01-16)
  • Block Storage (NO DATA, EMPTY VOLUME)

I’m posting the resolution to my issue here for anyone else who may encounter a similar scenario.

Original problem: After I restored one of my droplets from a “Backup Service” droplet snapshot, the attached volume showed it was mounted, but totally empty.

DO Support had greater visibility than I did. What they saw from their end is that the volume only appeared to have been mounted correctly on my side (both from the DigitalOcean UI Droptlet, and Volume interface). In reality it wasn’t mounted at all. To resolve this I had to completely delete the mount point and mount it again. After that the volume mounted correctly and showed the missing data.

Hi @cosmo,

It seems like your backup didn’t contain the information thus resulting in this issue. Unfortunately, we here at the community won’t be able to assist in any way.

With that in mind, if you provide us with the ticket reference, we’ll ask the DigitalOcean support to take a further look on it. As soon as we have the ticket reference, we’ll start the process.
